NOT JUST FOR THE RIDE

The sailboat had failed to return by sunset. The brisk breeze which had filled its sails and sped it on its way that morning had died down completely, leaving it becalmed somewhere in the far reaches of the bay. So a motor launch was sent out to find it and tow it back to its home port, and a small group of vacationers were invited along for the ride.

Soon a sailboat was sighted. Two wear figures paddling it looked up hopefully as the big launch approached with towline ready. But the little craft the launch was seeking had a large figure I on its sail. This was not it!

After the launch had cruised some distance farther, the captain stopped and checked his supply of gasoline, remarking that it might be a long search. When one of the passengers asked if he knew which direction the sailboat had taken that morning, he replied, "All we know is that it is somewhere in the western part of the bay."
