Some years ago, whilst running...
Some years ago, whilst running to catch a train, I slipped and fell on a freshly laid and slippery mosaic surface in the station. Being hampered by a small attache case that I was carrying, I fell very awkwardly, twisting underneath me my right leg and foot. I immediately felt considerable pain in my right ankle, but somehow managed to ascend a flight of steps and board the train. On reaching my destination, I took a taxicab to my home. When I removed my shoe, the foot at once swelled to about twice its normal size, becoming much discolored and continuing very painful. Help was at once sought from a Christian Science practitioner and was immediately given, and although I continued in some pain that night, by the following day it had considerably lessened.
The condition continued to improve during the next few days, but the swelling persisted, and considerable pain was experienced whenever an effort was made to put the foot to the ground. Help was being given all the time by the practitioner, but as the fear that a bone had been broken was persistent, it was decided to have an X-ray examination. This revealed that there had been a fracture of the tibia, but, setting being unnecessary, only message treatment was suggested. This was politely but firmly refused.
The fear was now entirely lifted, and the healing progressed more rapidly, and before very long I was again able to stand and walk normally. Since then I have served four and a half years in the ranks of the British Army during the last war, and this included the usual training periods with their attendant route marches and the like, all undertaken without ill effect.
