In loving gratitude to our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, for Christian Science, I submit this testimony. I was in bondage for nearly twenty-five years to constipation and hemorrhoids. I knew very little about Christian Science at that time, but a sister persuaded me to have the help of a practitioner. After each treatment, however, I would go home and take medicine. I found myself worse instead of better. Jesus said, "No man can serve two masters" (Matt. 6:24), and that was what I was trying to do. The time came when I had to choose Christian Science or surgery; then I threw out all medicine and earnestly took up the study of Science. After reading Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy for about four weeks, I was healed. That was nineteen years ago, and the healing has been permanent. I have had many healings since then, sometimes with the help of a practitioner and sometimes by my own understanding. I have been healed of colds, headaches, stomach trouble, and many other problems.

When I have a problem which seems stubborn, I think of my first healing and remember that all things are possible to God, and I recall Mrs. Eddy's statement on page 463 in Science and Health, "A spiritual idea has not a single element of error, and this truth removes properly whatever is offensive." When I use this truth properly, it does heal, sometimes instantaneously; but sometimes I have to clear my own thought more thoroughly and then the healing comes.

At one time I stood on a box in our garage to reach some articles on a high shelf. The box went forward and I fell backward, striking the back of my head on the cement floor. After regaining consciousness, I found myself saying, "God is my Life." After I was helped to my feet, I again lost consciousness. I was assisted into the house and onto my bed, and then I discovered that I had a large lump on the back of my head and other bruises, which were very painful. My sister tried to telephone to a practitioner, but could not reach him, so she sat down and read to me from Science and Health. She turned at random to page 393, and read this passage: "Have no fear that matter can ache, swell, and be inflamed as the result of a law of any kind, when it is self-evident that matter can have no pain nor inflammation." This was just what I needed, for in a few minutes the lump vanished as if it had never been. This happened on a Sunday, and on Wednesday of that week I was back at my work, with just a few slight bruises and discolorations on my body, which soon disappeared.
