Establishing and Maintaining

[The paragraphs following are from a report prepared by the chairman of a Reading Room committee.]

In 1932 this Christian Science Society established a Christian Science Reading Room in the Y. M. C. A. and opened it to the public one afternoon a week. For some years this Reading Room was inactive. Very few of the members used it, and very few strangers found their way to it to inquire about Christian Science. Often, the librarian had little or nothing in the way of activity to report to the members at business meetings. Not infrequently afternoons passed without any visitors. On one occasion the librarian had no report to give. As she sat alone in the Reading Room pondering this, she wrote the three words "God's Reading Room." This was read at the meeting of the members as the librarian's report. Since that time it has proved most helpful to all working to improve our Reading Room.

Some time later the executive board appointed a Reading Room Activity Committee to consider ways of improving the services and facilities of the room and supporting them. The Reading Room hours were increased, and its arrangement was improved. Members showed more interest in its use and support.

The committee did much prayerful work, then met regularly to exchange ideas. Inspiring meetings were also held to bring the Reading Room to the attention of the members. These resulted in widening interest in the Reading Room. Activity also grew.
