GRATITUDE, THE APPROACH TO GOD

Many earnest students of Christian Science, having acquired much of the letter, yet feel the lack of that intimate and satisfying touch with the all-loving Father-Mother God that they had anticipated as an assured reward. They have passed the stage of doubt and uncertainty; they have great faith in the healing and regenerating power of the Christ Science, but the realization of abounding Love, the deep sense of God's enfolding, protecting care that is the result of spiritual understanding, is not experienced. But as the understanding of unity with God is progressively attained, they know the exalted joy that comes with it.

To every seeker for Truth there is an open door, and this open door is gratitude. Gratitude leads into the presence of God. As gratitude is felt and expressed, love is born, and God becomes an intimate and everpresent reality.

Today, with the material world in unprecedented turmoil, with every condition surrounding mortal existence so seemingly threatening and unpredictable, the plaint of Job (23:3), "Oh that I knew where I might find him [God]! that I might come even to his seat!" is going up from millions of earth's inhabitants. And yet, to each one, God is really more close and enfolding than the air we breathe, did they but realize it.
