THE HEALING POWER OF LOVE

"Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law" (Rom. 13:10). In these words St. Paul, the great Apostle of the Gentiles, referred to the motive power underlying all Christian healing. That love is the motive of healing in Christian Science is made clear by its revelator, Mary Baker Eddy, on page 454 of her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," where she writes, "Love for God and man is the true incentive in both healing and teaching."

The operation of spiritual love in the human consciousness changes an individual's nature and casts out hate. Selfishness is replaced by generosity; pride and arrogance are replaced by gentleness and compassion. As consciousness is purified, it reflects the healing Truth, which destroys the errors of the carnal mind, even as the light of the sun may readily find its way through a clear windowpane and dispel the darkness in a room.

This revelation of spiritual love may come suddenly as an influx of light, as it came to Saul of Tarsus on the road to Damascus, intent upon further persecuting the Christians. In Acts (9:3) we read, "And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven." Later we find him in the house of Judas at Damascus, in the street called Straight, and he was blind. He was praying.
