NO HALTING OR HALFWAY POSITION

[Original article in German]

Every earnest student of Christian Science learns that there is no greater foe to progress in Christian Science than a halfway position. Even human experience shows that success in any worthwhile endeavor depends upon the devotion we give to it. Christian Science is no exception, as these words by Mary Baker Eddy in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" point out (p. 274): "Divine Science is absolute, and permits no half-way position in learning its Principle and rule—establishing it by demonstration."

Sometimes we may wonder why the success we desire comes only very slowly or not at all. Even our best efforts to overcome fear and doubt and to master the evidence of the senses may seem inadequate. In trying to find the reason for lack of progress, we often hear it said: "I attend the church services and Wednesday testimony meetings regularly and read the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly every day. I am a member of a branch church and of The Mother Church. I have had class instruction. I attend Christian Science lectures; and yet I cannot make my demonstration."

Does not this remind one of the rich young man's reply to Jesus when the Master recommended that he keep the Commandments (Luke 18:21): "All these have I kept from my youth up"? Whereupon Jesus answered, "Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me."
