Church Dedications

Note: Christian Science churches are dedicated only when free from debt.

Described as "the outward manifestation of the grace, purity, and united purpose enthroned in the hearts of the members of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Sutton," the imposing structure in Cheam Road, Sutton, completed in 1938, was dedicated on Sunday, March 26, 1950.

It was revealed that in 1923 a few Christian Scientists in Sutton realized the need of a Christian Science organization in the district. They resigned membership of the Croydon church for work in Sutton. The first public services and Sunday School classes were held in the Sutton Adult School on October 28, 1923. Within a few weeks of the inauguration more central and convenient premises were found, and for over four years the Sunday services and Wednesday testimony meetings were held in the small Public Hall. In 1925 a Reading Room was opened in High Street.

In 1927 the site now occupied by the local authority in Cheam Road was purchased and a church building erected. This was opened for services in July, 1928, following the recognition by The Mother Church of the society as First Church of Christ, Scientist, Sutton. In 1931 there was an extension to the Sunday School, and the Reading Room was transferred to Grove Road.
