A Sentinel given to me by a business...
A Sentinel given to me by a business colleague was the means of my family and myself becoming students of Christian Science.
I feel especially grateful that our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, has revealed Christian Science as a preventive, as well as a healing art. She says, "The prophylactic and therapeutic (that is, the preventive and curative) arts belong emphatically to Christian Science, as would be readily seen, if psychology, or the Science of Spirit, God, was understood" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 369). If we endeavor to keep our thoughts alert to detect false suggestions and then at once reject them, replacing them with the true concept of God and man as revealed in Science and Health, we shall indeed experience health, joy, abundance, and protection. I acknowledge that it was an earnest study of Christian Science that made my service abroad with His Majesty's Forces so rich with experience and blessings and later led to inspiring work as a Christian Science librarian in Service Centers in Italy.
One experience I had stands out, for it was a very valuable lesson. I was acting as soloist at the Christian Science services held in the Service Center in Algiers, North Africa, and we had practically no music at all; so the student who was our pianist on one occasion wrote a solo for a specific Lesson-Sermon. During the previous week, I was away for a short holiday and developed a severe cold. When I returned to Algiers, although I had been endeavoring to see the nothingness of the claim, I could hardly speak. I telephoned the Christian Science chaplain, who was our First Reader, and managed to tell him the situation. I shall ever be grateful for his wise and loving answer, "Whatever your decision, you know we shall be supporting you."
