TAKING STOCK

It is an established custom for business concerns to take stock, at certain periods during each year, of the merchandise, or materials, on hand. Most industries inventory their stock once a year, but where special conditions prevail, this listing is made more frequently.

It is an excellent plan for all of us to take stock of what we have in the house as often as possible. Christian Scientists have a special incentive to do this, since Mary Baker Eddy says in "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" (pp. 128, 129): "Watch, and pray daily that evil suggestions, in whatever guise, take no root in your thought nor bear fruit. Ofttimes examine yourselves, and see if there be found anywhere a deterrent of Truth and Love and 'hold fast that which is good.'"

A businessman on taking inventory may find certain items which are not profitable. Immediately he takes steps to get rid of these liabilities so that he can start the next inventory period with a clean slate. A Christian Scientist may find in his inventory thoughts of sickness, sin, hatred, resentment, envy, impatience, intolerance. These are, indeed, unprofitable thoughts to carry in his stock, and he should be prompt in disposing of them, knowing that since they do not emanate from the one divine Mind, from which all true intelligence comes, they have no value and are in fact unreal. Having done this, he can make a new start to gain spiritual understanding and to demonstrate the truth of perfect God, perfect man, and perfect universe.
