Christian Science Committees on Publication SAFEGUARD OUR SCHOOL CHILDREN'S RIGHTS
[From annual reports]
New Jersey
In reviewing the past year's Committee on Publication work, in which all Christian Scientists have had an important part in defending and furthering the Cause of Christian Science, we note two significant developments. One presents a glorious challenge—the challenge that we Christian Scientists rise to meet prayerfully and effectively the awakening desire by an increasing number of people to learn something about the teachings and practice of Christian Science. The other constitutes a threat—the threat to individual religious liberty in the guise of local and nationsl welfare legislation which often has as its basis the insistent material belief that man is the child of the state rather than the child of God. Rightly viewed, such a threat can be turned into a steppingstone of progress through the efforts of Christian Scientists who put God first and who stand up resolutely for their religion and refuse obeisance to human theories.
An example of what is being done in this direction is the interesting experience of a woman whose son told her that the Boy Scout troop he was joining required a medical examination. The mother made a friendly call on the scoutmaster. She pointed out that medical examination was not consistent with the teachings of Christian Science and asked that her son be excused from this requirement. The scoutmaster granted her request, and then came the bonus as a reward for the mother's courageous stand. The scoutmaster said he would like to have a talk on Christian Science before one of their Scout meetings so that the boy's and mother's stand would not be thought strange or ridiculed and so the Scouts would have some understanding of Christian Science. A talk was given, and the lively question and answer period that followed showed a searching desire on the part of a good many of the boys to find out more about Christian Science and how it works.
