RESPONSE IS NECESSARY

We all appreciate a good correspondent—one who answers a letter promptly, one who responds to our inquiries and is direct in his reply. In Christian Science it is necessary to be responsive and direct. Mary Baker Eddy makes many statements in her writings to which we can respond with conviction, thereby strengthening our hold upon the truth she has stated. Take an instance of this, to be found in the Preface to the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," where she writes (p. vii), "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings." A student of Christian Science with implicit reliance on God can respond to this statement with conviction, "I am leaning on the sustaining infinite, and therefore my day is big with blessings."

Again, on page 393 of the textbook we read, "Be firm in your understanding that the divine Mind governs, and that in Science man reflects God's government." One would surely not be out of order to respond in the affirmative as the child of God and identify himself with this great statement. Such a response might well be, "I am firm in my understanding that the divine Mind governs, and in Science I do reflect God's government."

A Christian Scientist received a quick and decisive healing by a ready response to Mrs. Eddy's words as found in the first verse of her "Communion Hymn" (Poems, p. 75). The Scientist was suddenly taken ill and with difficulty managed to call a Christian Science practitioner. The practitioner said he would help her immediately, and the Scientist sat down by her fireside feeling too ill to do more than reach out to God for help. She did remember, however, that the practitioner said, "I will help you immediately," so she was prepared to receive immediate relief.
