Signs of the Times

Marshall R. Reed in an article in the Michigan Christian Advocate Adrian, Michigan

The wonderful fact about the idea of God is that it is a growing idea. One of the greatest miracles of the Old Testament era is that from an early primitive and physical conception of God there finally emerged through the souls of the prophets the idea that God is justice and mercy and righteousness. ... There grew the conviction that through the still, small voice He speaks to all of us who will listen. Likewise, one of the greatest miracles of human experience in our day is realized when one moves from faith in a physical God to faith in God as a spiritual presence able to do for us what we cannot do for ourselves.

There are two aspects of the idea of the God we trust that are both Scriptural and inspiring. ... Jesus said specifically that "God is a Spirit." This means much to us. For example, it means that He does not live on Mt. Olympus, from which He comes down only at His own caprice. Nor does it mean that we must go to Jerusalem in order to find Him. Rather, in the language of the French philosopher, it means "the beyond is within." God is present as a Spirit and is ready to do for us all that He has ever done for His people anywhere. When our minds and hearts are attuned to Him, we realize His presence.
