LETTERS TO THE PRESS

Mail Tribune

Medford, Oregon Mail Tribune

We agree with the writer of a recent letter to the Mail Tribune who says that there must be more individual thinking in the world, but we most heartily disagree with his inclusion of the name of Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, as an example of a "glib leader [who] can influence a mob beyond all reason." There is nothing in the life and works of Mrs. Eddy, nor in the purpose, activity, or Tenets of the church which she founded, to exemplify the "organized selfishness" which your correspondent so vigorously decries.

To those familiar with the facts, Mrs. Eddy's life is an outstanding example of humble waiting upon God for direction and steadfast following in the way of His leading. Few of history's great have evidenced such devotion to the Scriptural counsel in Proverbs (3:5, 6): "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths."
