Christian Science Committees on Publication Report

WIDER RECOGNITION OF OUR CHURCH

Lanarkshire, Scotland

A meeting of representatives of churches in Scotland with the Secretary of State for Scotland was held in St. Andrew's House, Edinburgh, to consider proposals for church buildings. In order to get on with the building of churches, the sum of £1.000,000 was authorized for this purpose for two years. For the first time in history the Church of Christ, Scientist, was included officially amongst all denominations of religious bodies in Scotland, and its claims, as put forward, had consideration. This means that the denomination known in Scotland as The Christian Science Church is recognized by the government of this country as a religion and as a church. An Inter-Church Committee was formed, representing fifteen religious bodies with two representatives of Christian Science on it, the Committee on Publication for Lanarkshire being one of them.

Churches of Christ, Scientist, and Christian Science Societies in Scotland presented to the National Library, Edinburgh, the beautiful Subscription Edition of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. This Committee visited the National Library to see the book and found it placed in a room which held gifts of great value, such as a very old German copy of the Bible in illuminated text valued at £50.000 and the manuscript copy of one of Sir Walter Scott's novels, in his own beautiful handwriting. Beside the glass case whereon the book lay, were sculptured works of Sir Walter Scott and Thomas Carlyle two authors quoted by Mrs. Eddy in her writings.
