"Great and effective serving"

The Rev. Lowell P. Herrick in an editorial in the Daily Reporter Independence, Kansas

A steward is a useful person—one who seeks to use his time, talents, and possessions for the good of mankind. Jesus was patient and gentle with everyone, but he ... could not tolerate an empty life. ...

It was the man who refused to use his talent that was cast into the outer darkness. The soil which was unproductive was condemned. The self-righteous son who said he would work in the vineyard, but did not, was condemned, while the son who was surly in the beginning, but repented and became useful, was praised. The barren fig tree was cursed for its sham and its utter uselessness.
