Operation held necessary but Science heals internal tumor
I have received many benefits throughout the years from the study of Christian Science. In the early days of the establishment of this Science in Denver, Colorado, my mother was healed of heart disease after being given but a few weeks to live by three physicians, following a consultation. I was then a small child, and shortly thereafter I attended the first Christian Science Sunday School established in Denver. Many times I have recalled with deep gratitude the inspiration aroused within that group of pupils by an understanding teacher. During our public school years the entire family of five children were free from so-called children's diseases. I did not miss a single day of school because of any illness in the twelve years.
After drifting westward. I married and settled on a farm some distance from town. I became so engrossed in material struggles that I felt like a squirrel in a cage. Eventually I became ill with influenza. The way opened for me to go to a home in the city, where I could receive Christian Science help. A physician who made a diagnosis reported an internal tumor and stated that an operation was necessary. I stood firmly for Christian Science help alone.
The practitioner told me that sometimes the readers of Christian Science literature accepted the theory without making Science a part of their living. Then it dawned upon me that there is no such thing as abstract good, that good could not be good unless it were active and operative, something I could individually experience. I could not truly worship God as good without experiencing His goodness. Then I told the practitioner that I had been declaring that "all is infinite Mind" without consciously including "and its infinite manifestation," whereas Mary Baker Eddy says in "the scientific statement of being" on page 468 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," "All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is all-in-all." I had been trying to drag the earthly into the heavenly instead of praying (ibid., p. 17), "Enable us to know,—as in heaven, so on earth,—God is omnipotent, supreme."
