Better consciousness of Spirit overcomes consciousness of self

Since my work does not permit me to attend the Wednesday evening testimony meetings, I am humbly and gratefully submitting my testimony in writing.

My parents were deeply religious people, but they believed in a personal God, and my early religious training consisted largely of fearing and worshiping matter. A constant fear persisted with me all through my school days. My train of errors then included selfishness, self-pity, self-justification, self-righteousness, and an extreme case of self-consciousness—I was always imagining that people were trying to oppress or hurt me.

I had crawled into a shell of erroneous thinking and did not come out of it until near the end of my last year in high school, about twenty years ago. I was asked by the principal to participate in a public speaking contest. The thought of appearing before a large audience made me feel very uncomfortable. However, a friend, who was later to become my wife, encouraged me to accept the invitation, which I therefore did.
