RECEIVING THE THINGS OF THE SPIRIT OF GOD

The Apostle Paul makes a thought-provoking statement in his first letter to the Corinthians (2: 14). He writes, "The natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned."

What an accurate appraisal of the carnal mind's distance from spiritual Truth is here presented! Little wonder that the teachings of Christian Science, calling for the spiritualization of consciousness, fall so often on ears unaccustomed to Truth's joyful sound. And yet it is possible for all humanity to learn, to know, and to speak the new tongue of spiritual sense.

This tongue is new, indeed, to those who have accepted as reality the presentments of the physical senses. For example, the newcomer to Science may be puzzled at first to hear a practitioner refer to disease, pain, or some other discord as error, or a lie. But when he begins to conceive of God as Spirit, infinitely good and harmonious, and learns that sickness and sin are not God-created nor God-supported, the conviction dawns that discord of every name and nature must be erroneous, lawless, and therefore should be designated as a mistaken sense, a lie.
