"UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT"
"Under new management. Completely renovated." This is a familiar announcement made by new proprietors to inform the public of their desire to give better service in pleasanter, more modern surroundings.
A similar reorganization takes place in consciousness when we become interested in the study of Christian Science and gain a new understanding of God and of man's relation to Him. This practical religion shows how to put ourselves "under new management"—under God's direction, guidance, and care—and thus be renewed in spirit, in our entire consciousness. In "Unity of Good" Mary Baker Eddy tells us (p. 6), "Sooner or later the whole human race will learn that, in proportion as the spotless selfhood of God is understood, human nature will be renovated, and man will receive a higher selfhood, derived from God, and the redemption of mortals from sin, sickness, and death be established on everlasting foundations."
Our "place of business" is not a mortal, physical structure or body, but is our consciousness, and thoughts are our stock in trade. Therefore, the renovation will be accomplished as one replaces false material beliefs with the spiritual truths of being. First one must take inventory of his mental storehouse and remove all inferior or obsolete stock—all false beliefs of man as a mortal. Next, he must take down the shelves of tradition and prejudice; clean his mental walls of stains of self-will, self-love, resentment, hatred, and ingratitude; and sweep down the cobwebs of false education. Then he is ready to redecorate his so-called human consciousness in the fresh, pleasing colors of Love and illuminate it with the light of spiritual understanding. Finally, he must replenish his stock of outmoded and unsatisfactory thoughts with spiritual facts, eternal truths imparted by divine Mind.
