THE DIGNITY OF HUMILITY

Peter , in writing to the early Christians, counseled them (I Pet. 5:5–7): "Be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you."

How wonderful it is to know that as we cast our care upon God, He cares for us, and that as we are clothed with humility, God gives us grace. This grace is the dignity of humility. Like all God-given gifts it brings the certainty of God's presence.

The dignity of humility which endures and commands respect bears no relation to the supposed dignity of pride. The dignity of humility is seen not only in the unwavering trust which commits all to God in selfless reliance upon good, but also in the ability to meet the affronts of error with calm and unhurried certainty that divine aid is at hand.
