Christian Science came into my...
Christian Science came into my life on June 12, 1908. I was facing a serious operation at the time, and my mental condition was alarming. I had heard the words "Christian Science" only once, when a kind neighbor who was calling on me remarked, after I had voiced my ills to her, that she had been healed of an internal tumor through Science treatment. In my dire need I sent for her, and she advised me to go to a practitioner, who would tell me about this wonderful healing Christ, Truth. I went, and in less than an hour I left the practitioner's home, healed and knowing for the first time that God is Love, and that He does not send sickness or evil of any kind upon His children. I felt that I had touched the hem of Christ's garment. That healing has been permanent.
Another healing took place when three fingers on my right hand were caught beneath a fallen window sash. I tried to release them, but to no avail. Error suggested: You are alone in the house. I looked about at my neighbors' houses and not a person could I see; to shout would have been useless. Then I turned to God, my ever-present help in trouble. I closed my eyes and knew that Spirit is the only power, that man is God's perfect, spiritual child, and that matter has no power to harm him. I repeated more than once "the scientific statement of being" from page 468 of the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy.
I continued to know the truth about God's spiritual creation and the nothingness of matter, until a sweet sense of peace enveloped me. I had the urge to try again to remove my fingers, and almost immediately I was free. I did not look at my hand, but sat down and continued to work mentally, for the pain was intense. Soon I was absolutely free. I had had to prove the truth of Mrs. Eddy's statement on page 503 of the textbook, "In the universe of Truth, matter is unknown."
