PREPARATION FOR A CHRISTIAN SCIENCE LECTURE

Whenever the members of a branch of The Mother Church sponsor a lecture on Christian Science, they make every effort to have it a success, a blessing to the whole community. A lecture should bring new light and added inspiration to the Christian Scientists in the locality, as well as present to those unacquainted with Christian Science a new and glorious vision of the goodness of God and of the present possibility of experiencing that goodness.

The workers of one branch church performed their task of preparing for the presentation of lectures for a number of years with apparent success. There seemed, however, to be no evidence of physical healing taking place as the result of these lectures. Seeking to gain a clearer comprehension of what constitutes the true giving of a lecture, they turned to God with singleness of heart and oneness of purpose and motive. They saw more clearly that He is the creating, sustaining, governing Principle of the universe, the Father and Mother of all. Looking steadfastly to Spirit, God, instead of to the evidence of the material senses, they began to feel and understand the presence of the Christ, the true and saving idea of God and man, tenderly leading them into a clearer comprehension of the all-presence of God, divine Love. The practical value of the statement by Mary Baker Eddy on page 454 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," became apparent to them: "Love for God and man is the true incentive in both healing and teaching. Love inspires, illumines, designates, and leads the way."

The members prayed to know Love's ever-presence and to realize that the healing truths to be imparted were Love's unfoldment, with the result that the giving of the next Christian Science lecture was a greater inspiration and joy. Still more joy was felt at the following Wednesday evening meeting, when several people related their experiences of having been healed at the lecture. Many living at distant points, who were unable to attend, wrote to the branch church requesting copies of the lecture and expressed gratitude for the privilege of hearing over the radio its healing and uplifting message of Truth.
