I wish to express gratitude for...
I wish to express gratitude for the many inspiring testimonies which I have heard at Wednesday evening meetings in Christian Science churches and which I have read in our periodicals.
It was through the latter medium that I first came to understand in any measure the theology of Christian Science. Several copies of Christian Science periodicals were sent to me by a friend who knew of my interest in the ministry of healing as practiced in various churches. At that time I was an ordained clergyman, and it seemed to me a tragic failure on the part of the churches that the healing ministry inaugurated by Christ Jesus and continued by his immediate followers, as recorded in the New Testament Gospels and in the book of Acts, had ceased to be the important work of the church that it had been in the first centuries of the Christian era. My first reading of the Christian Science literature was without much appreciation, although I tried to understand the message of the several articles that I read. Indeed, it was not until I came to the pages of testimonies that I became interested. Here were accounts of remarkable healings, cures not unlike those in the New Testament itself, a fruitage of Christianity which, I believed, one had a right to expect in every age.
Procuring at once a copy of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, in order to learn, if possible, how such wondrous healings had been effected, I read the book through in a few days. At the same time I found that a many years' addiction to the use of cigarettes had ceased, and I realized that my reading of Science and Health had somehow brought this about. Then there followed a more careful consideration of the textbook and a study of it, and this led to some understanding of the theology underlying its teachings, with, of course, accompanying demonstrations of a wonderful nature.
