Paul says, "Rejoice in the Lord...
Paul says, "Rejoice in the Lord alway" (Phil. 4:4). I rejoice to relate the main blessings that have come to me through Christian Science. I had sought God and a meaning of the universe in orthodox churches, philosophy, psychology, art, pantheism, and eastern religions. Finally, I was confined to bed for many months with a heart condition which physicians said forbade any movement. I was burdened with a false sense of responsibility, lack, remorse, rebellion, and grief at my mother's passing.
Tuning in on a broadcast of a Christian Science church service, I heard these words from Mrs. Eddy's spiritual interpretation of the Lord's Prayer (Science and Health, p. 17): "And God leadeth us not into temptation, but delivereth us from sin, disease, and death." I was amazed that here was a God of love, not of wrath or punishment. I arose and the next Wednesday evening I attended a Christian Science testimony meeting. Here a testifier said, "Peace is an understanding of God." Having known all human joys, yet never peace, I began to read the Christian Science literature and to attend church services regularly. Within two months I was able to make a trip alone to California.
Through learning in Christian Science that God is our Mother as well as our Father, I was healed of my grief. Lack was overcome by my study of the account of Jesus' feeding of the multitude as recorded in Luke (9:10-17) and through my gratitude and faith in inexhaustible Principle. A fall down a long, metal-edged stairway left no bruises or hurt when I audibly declared, "Underneath are the everlasting arms" (Deut. 33:27). I was healed of an injured ankle through holding to the truths taught in Christian Science. Remorse disappeared through my realizing that "God requireth that which is past" (Eccl. 3:15).
