How truly our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy,...

How truly our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, says in "No and Yes" (p. 39), "It is a truism that we can think more lucidly and profoundly than we can write or speak," for when I attempt to express my gratitude for Christian Science and what it has done for me and mine over a period of years, words fail me, although my heart cries out to share with the world the joy that has come to me.

We first heard about Christian Science through the change brought about in the disposition of an official in the company by which my husband was employed. From a harsh, unreasonable, and erratic individual, this man became a most kindly and considerate one. Upon inquiry we learned that his wife had been healed of cancer as a result of Christian Science treatment, and that he was applying the rules of its teachings. On his invitation we attended a Christian Science service and met his family. We were much impressed, but because we were active members of an orthodox church and were satisfied with what life was offering at that time, we considered their acquaintance merely another social asset. We attended services and read the Christian Science literature only occasionally, but the seed was sown. So when we changed our place of residence from the city to a suburban locality, we decided to attend the Christian Science church regularly.

Shortly after this I became ill with a severe internal disorder, and because I had no foundation in Christian Science, I was fearful and afraid to take a chance with Science treatment . For many weary months I rigidly followed the doctor's orders and was under nurses' attention a great part of the time, but with all this I grew steadily worse. In a most miserable condition I attended the Thanksgiving Day service that year, and as I listened to the expressions of gratitude being given one after the other, I seemed to hear a voice speaking to me very clearly, saying: "'God is no respecter of persons' (Acts 10:34). He will do as much for you, if you will give Him a chance." Right then I mentally took my stand, and at the close of the service I asked an usher to introduce me to a practitioner. One was standing right beside us, and after the introduction I hysterically told her my tale of woe. She lovingly agreed to help me, asking only that I discard all material remedies and place full reliance on God. This I was now willing to do, and as a result there was immediate improvement in my condition.
