I have been a student of Christian Science...
I have been a student of Christian Science for eighteen years. Up to 1944 I had been connected with a medical institution in an executive capacity for twenty years as a materia medica nurse, holding a very desirable, well-paying civil service position.
In 1943 I made out an application for admittance to the United States Army Nurse Corps. I had to undergo a physical examination. After it was completed, the doctor said he would recommend me for admission as he found me physically fit. An X ray was taken of my lungs, which was not seen by a doctor until later. After a couple of weeks had passed I received a letter from headquarters which read in part: "We regret to inform you that you were found physically disqualified for service with the Army Nurse Corps because of tuberculosis. ... Recommend reexamination in six months." This news was a great shock to me, for there had never been any least indication of the existence of such a condition.
I called a Christian Science practitioner, who gave me two specific treatments, then told me that she felt I was able to handle my own case. I delved deeply into the study of this Science to know how to refute this lie about the truth. One of the statements which helped me greatly in seeing the utter falsity of the X-ray report was this (Luke 17: 21): "Behold, the kingdom of God is within you." Paul says (I Cor. 3: 16), "Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?" How then could I contain anything so unlike God? I knew that the temple of the living God is whole, complete, perfect, and contains only Godlike qualities.
