"Some people feel that everything that happens is somehow God's will. ... I find certain dogged difficulties in that view. To begin with, it is fatalistic. It says, in effect, that nothing can be done to prevent death when your time comes—which makes us appear rather ridiculous when we spend vast sums of money and employ some of our best minds in scientific medicine, attempting to lengthen life. ...

"This view appears also to undercut all morality, for it implies that human sin is not at fault. If everything is determined beforehand, then a man may be reckless, abusive to others, cruel and hateful, yet whatever he does is what God means to have done! If it is God's will, then the man is never to blame. ...
