When I started reading the...

When I started reading the Christian Science periodicals I found it surprising that so many of the testimonies were given after the writers had been proving the practicality of this Science for many years. I soon learned, however, that by honest and consecrated study, and through an abiding faith, we can at once prove the verity and applicability of its teachings. The fact that I myself could prove the power of God and was not required to believe in it merely because someone else told me of it, made a great impression on me. Now I am included in that happy throng who have the privilege of speaking of experiences in Christian Science covering more than twenty years.

The problems that have been solved through the application of the teaching of this blessed Science are varied. The first physical healing I had was of a cold. For several years, with the beginning of winter I became feverish and had to spend a few days in bed, then some days in convalescence. This condition came upon me after a few months of study of Christian Science. I was a newcomer in America, and my knowledge of English was so small that I had to look up in the dictionary forty to forty-five words on each page of the textbook. Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. The practitioner to whom I turned for help advised me, to my slight amazement, if not amusement, to read the textbook. I did so, and through some thirty pages it seemed that everything had special application for me. The next day I was entirely well, so much so that I went swimming. In this healing the far more valuable gain was that I learned the unreality of all sickness. This lesson has stayed with me through all these years, and when the suggestion of any illness has come I have always been able to reject it instantly before it could take form in bodily appearance.

Later on, while I was living in a country where economic conditions, even before this last war, were at a low ebb, financial difficulties were a recurring experience. There were times when I was even tempted to cancel my subscription to our periodicals or refrain from contributing to our church expenses, but God always came quickly to my rescue, and neither I nor mine ever suffered lack, however scarce even food was at times. God most tenderly taught me to seek first His righteousness. When I forget to place Him first, I am always forced to put wholehearted reliance on Principle; and supplies come from wholly unexpected sources to the extent that I am able to help even strangers.
