"THE BABE WE ARE TO CHERISH"

Like Hagar, doubting and downcast
When fount of hope seems spent and dried,
Would we let fear deplete our trust,
And let despair and anguish hide
God's love?

Like Hagar, would we leave the lad
And comfortless shed bitter tears,
Accepting dreams of mortal sense—
The very fountain of our tears—
As real?

The lad fears not: pure, childlike trust
Expects all good. God hears his voice,
And straightway Love's sweet angel thought
Bids Hagar: "Fear not. but rejoice.
Arise!"

Let us arise—
Lift up our gaze from sense to Soul;
Cherish the babe of Love at hand—
Truth's healing Christ: with open eyes
Behold the well of Life—there stand
Freeborn.
