FOLLOWING DIRECTIONS

The results claimed for any commercial product are guaranteed only if all the directions are carefully followed, not merely obeyed in part or adapted to conform to the whim of the user. This was made clear to the writer recently when using a highly recommended article for the first time. After she had taken all the initially prescribed steps, the suggestion came that the device did not seem to be working: but she patiently and faithfully proceeded to carry out the final instructions, and lo, its effectiveness was completely demonstrated.

Our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, has pointed out the necessity of wholehearted obedience on the part of those who wish to follow the Christ, Truth, and to accomplish the works which Jesus said we would be able to do. She admonishes us as follows in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 116): "If in one instance obedience be lacking, you lose the scientific rule and its reward."

A simple, heartfelt desire to know more of the things pertaining to God is the essential starting point for an unfoldment of the divine Principle of Christian Science. Mrs. Eddy tells us in our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 239), "The objects we pursue and the spirit we manifest reveal our standpoint, and show what we are winning." In proportion as we are willing to abandon our reliance on matter, to lay aside all prejudices and preconceived notions, we meekly approach the open door to the revelation of Christian Science, through which we have begun to discern the allness of God, good, and the nothingness of evil.
