Until the latter part of the year 1931, when I became interested in Christian Science, the Bible had been a closed book to me. At this time the reading of the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, gave me the spiritual interpretation of the truths set forth in the Bible.

I started to attend church services, and that was the beginning of earnest study of the Lesson-Sermons given in the Christian Science Quarterly. At some time along the way I began to realize that I had been healed of the use of profanity, which had been quite prevalent just before I took up this religious study. Also within the first year I was healed of the tobacco habit, which I had had for years. The bondage was so great that I was never without pipe, cigarette, or cigar in all my waking hours. The desire definitely left me. and in over fourteen years I have never once had a longing to return to the old habit. This healing brought about better digestion. I was freed from throat irritation, and at the same time my vision was greatly improved. Social drinking of alcoholic beverages also has been overcome, and I am grateful to say that there is not the slightest temptation to indulge when a drink is offered.

Many other minor healings, physical and mental, took place in these early days as I daily studied the Bible and our textbook with the use of the Quarterly, but up to this time there was no specific work taken up for any particular trouble. "Every step towards goodness is a departure from materiality, and is a tendency towards God, Spirit" (Science and Health, p. 213).
