When Christian Science was...
When Christian Science was first presented to me, it came as an answer to prayer, or rather to a despairing cry for help. I was in very poor health physically, and my difficulties included a rupture which caused much suffering. I had submitted to one operation for this condition, but it had returned, and I was being prepared for another. Something in my thought rebelled against it, and reaching out for help, I was led to one who told me about Christian Science. My first visit to a practitioner resulted in healing, and gradually strength returned.
There had also been a ruptured condition between a member of the family and me, and as the understanding of God and man's relationship to Him unfolded in my consciousness through the daily study of Christian Science and prayerful effort to see only what God sees, we were both helped, harmony was restored, and a far better relationship was manifested. I shall never cease to be grateful for this healing.
At one time when I was busy about the home, the thought of acertain disease in regard to our daughter, who was many miles away, came to me, and I worked to clear my thought. The next day I received a letter from her saying she was manifesting this particular disease, and two days later she wrote that after writing the first letter she found herself entirely free. This had occurred when I worked to heal my own thought regarding her. When her little girl was born a few months later, the attending doctor said regretfully that there was no life. She just turned to me and asked to be told what Life is. The words of Mrs. Eddy's poem beginning, "O gentle presence, peace and joy and power" (Poems, p. 4), came to me, and as we repeated the first verse aloud, her thought seemed full of light. Then we heard the first cry of the little one. This child is a great joy to all of us. We were grateful to the Christian Science nurse, who stood firm, expecting the healing, and to the doctor, who acknowledged it, not only to us but also to others.
