Religion and Prosperity

D. R. Davies in an editorial in the Hanging Heaton Parish Magazine Yorkshire, England

The Bible has a great deal to say about prosperity, happiness, social well-being, and progress. The great prophets never tire of proclaiming that prosperity and progress depend on the nation being obedient to the law and will of God. Material abundance, they say, is a byproduct of doing God's will. Jesus Christ also teaches the same thing. "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, ... and all these things shall be added unto you."

Social disaster, economic failure, strife, and discord are the result of disobedience to the will of God. "Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land: but if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it" (Isa. 1:18-20).
