LETTING GO
A Student of Christian Science standing within earshot of two men who were engaged in a heated discussion heard one of them say loudly and rather caustically to the other, "Why don't you let go and be yourself?" The student pondered this remark in the light of Christian Science and reasoned that to be yourself, that is, to claim one's real selfhood as the perfect reflection of the one Father-Mother God, necessarily entailed the letting go of material concepts which cause one to believe that man is sometimes outside the perfection of infinite Mind.
Fear often causes us to hold to the very mortal beliefs which defraud us of happiness and abundance in our human experience. A child does not learn to walk unaided until there is a letting go in his thought of the fear that he will fall if there is not something or someone to hold to. So we must be alert to recognize and let go of false beliefs to which we are holding and claim and demonstrate the dominion which, as the Scriptures reveal, is the heritage of every child of God.
Would we be free from sickness? Christian Science teaches that to have this freedom we must let go of the binding false belief that sickness is ever part of God's man, the reflection of perfect Mind. In Mind there is no imperfection, no discord, for man to reflect. Man as a spiritual idea of God's creating is therefore ever free from every manner of imperfection. Mary Baker Eddy gives us this comforting assurance of divine Love's healing power in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 243): "The divine Love, which made harmless the poisonous viper, which delivered men from the boiling oil, from the fiery furnace, from the jaws of the lion, can heal the sick in every age and triumph over sin and death."
