For some time I have felt more...
For some time I have felt more and more the desire to express my gratitude for Christian Science and for the many blessings I have been privileged to experience. My mother turned to Science for help when I was born, although at the time she possessed only a Christian Science Quarterly. However, she did know a practitioner. The nurse who was attending my mother did not think it would be possible for me to be born alive, but my mother, desiring to turn to God for help, asked the nurse to fetch the Quarterly for her, which she did. The passage which helped my mother was from Psalms (50:15), "And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me." And the thought came to her that if Christian Science would make it possible for me to live, I should live for the Cause of Christian Science.
My birth was normal, but later when the doctor saw me he expressed great doubt that I could live. My mother, however, as soon as she was able, took me to the practitioner whom she knew. Help was lovingly given, and I was quickly healed. Through Christian Science I have also been healed of measles, scarlet fever, tonsillitis, abscess, fever, and eczema. My mother has been healed of a weak heart, a stroke, and rheumatism through the study of Christian Science and the help of a practitioner. Sunday School was a very joyous experience for me, whenever my mother could take me to the nearest one, which was nine miles away at Interlaken, Switzerland.
Later on my desire for progress in Christian Science was great, and I felt I should like to be able to read in English also. I was waiting longingly for a permit to go to England. I had a talk with a practitioner about it after Sunday School one Sunday and on the following Friday I was in England. I did not know of any Christian Science church for two years; meanwhile the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, was my only real friend, and I learned that I could never live without it.
