SHUTTING THE DOOR

Unto the man of God a widow came,
Burdened with debt and fearful for her sons.
Elisha questioned, then in simple words
He gave her clear instructions, which include
That brief injunction, "Thou shalt shut the door."
And when his orders were obeyed, and she
Had shut the door, the oil was duly poured.
Behold, her need was met abundantly.

A Shunem woman in her sore distress
Laid on the prophet's bed her only child,
And (so the record reads) she left the room
"And shut the door upon him, and went out."
Then as, in answer to her loyal faith,
The prophet came and entered in the room
Where the lad lay, "he shut the door and prayed
Unto the Lord." The child was thus restored.

When Jesus taught his students how to pray,
He warned them of the prayer that seeks for show
And bade them shut the door when seeking God;
Then should their true reward come openly.
