A NEW NAME
[Of Special Interest to Children]
Many people who lived in Jacob's time thought of God as the god of one tribe but not of another. They did not know Him as divine Love and Spirit. But Jacob learned that wherever we are we can feel God's presence through angel messages which come to us when we lift our thought to Him. The use of these angel thoughts in our everyday life makes us happy, helpful, kind, honest, obedient, and healthy. Angel thoughts are always at hand to help children do better work in school, to be obedient to their parents and teachers, and to be fair and honest when they are playing games.
Let us think for a little while about Jacob's life and see how angel thoughts helped him to gain a more spiritual nature and thus get a new name. When Jacob was a young man he did a great wrong to his brother Esau. From that time he was afraid of his brother. One who does wrong is always afraid and is not happy. Jacob could not be truly happy until he had made peace with his brother.
Fearing that his brother would harm him, Jacob left his home and went to a far-away land to dwell with Laban, his uncle. There he cared for his uncle's flocks and herds.
