While I was attending the Sunday School...

While I was attending the Sunday School of an orthodox church I was asked to become a member of that church. I consented, but later became quite disturbed because I felt that I was not prepared to take that step.

I finally decided that I would not join that church, and shortly afterward a member of my family, who had become interested in Christian Science through a healing she had experienced, invited me to attend Christian Science services with her. I accepted the invitation and soon enrolled in the Sunday School. From that time to the time of my enlistment in the Army during the first World War, I experienced a number of healings, including those of the smoking habit, boils, sprains, and colds.

While in France I suffered an attack of appendicitis which I was unable to overcome through my own understanding of Science. I was in a small detachment where no medical officer was regularly stationed. When one arrived, he ordered me to a hospital immediately. I was operated on the next morning, and the diagnosis was—in addition to the appendicitis—peritonitis and a ruptured bladder caused by the burst appendix. The surgeon gave me an extremely slight chance of recovery. As soon as I was able, I wrote to the Christian Science War Relief Committee in Paris for help, which was promptly and lovingly given. My recovery and the speed of it were a marvel to all attached to the hospital.
