Through a desire to know God...
Through a desire to know God and how to serve Him, I was led to Christian Science. When I saw the statement, "Desire is prayer," on page 1 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, I knew God had answered my plea. I read and reread the chapter on Prayer. I was overjoyed to find that God is Love, for I had been taught just the opposite as a child. The woman who had given me the textbook had said, "Christian Scientists do not use medicine." I immediately threw away all that I had in the house, and my baby, who had been crying every night for over a week with the colic, slept soundly that night. I asked the woman why the baby did not cry. Her reply was, "Because you have put your whole trust in God." How joyful I was when I realized that I had found a practical religion, one which I could use in my everyday problems.
The first healing I received came through reading the textbook. It was of a cold in my head and eyes. I had been subject to colds for many years and had tried many different medicinal treatments with no results. Then it came to me to try reading from the textbook. I thought that would be impossible, since my eyes were closing, and at other times I had always retired to a dark room to ease the pain, but I decided I would try to read anyway. I could see only one word at a time, but I kept on until I could read a complete sentence. I became so interested in my reading that I forgot everything else. When my husband came into the room and spoke to me, I realized that I was healed.
This all took place over twenty years ago. What a blessing to me and to my family that Christian Science came into our home when it did, for after I had gained a better understanding of God and man I was healed of all fear of so-called children's diseases. Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health (p. 390), It is our ignorance of God, the divine Principle, which produces apparent discord, and the right understanding of Him restores harmony."
