Church Meetings

As students of Christian Science we are striving to work out our salvation in the light of our present spiritual understanding and to the best of our ability. This is as it should be. However, there are times when we find it necessary to co-operate with our fellows in some joint undertaking, as, for example, in our branch church work. In this work each may contribute of his understanding and enlightenment, always with the object of presenting the Christ, Truth, to as much of humanity as may be reached. In striving toward this common goal, Christian Science church members are united as one.

For the beginner as well as for the advanced student our church meetings have a value and a purpose. Such meetings are held in order to conduct the business of the church in an orderly manner in accord with rules set up for church government, so that that which is needful for church activity is provided.

But a meeting of members of a Christian Science branch church is more, much more, than the orderly transaction of business, however important this may be. It is an individual and a collective effort to reflect the qualities of Spirit, of Life, Truth, and Love. In this way the true Church, described in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy (p. 583) as "the structure of Truth and Love; whatever rests upon and proceeds from divine Principle," becomes evident in greater measure to human consciousness.
