Letters to the Press from Christian Science Committees on Publication

Southland Daily News

William Shackle, Committee on Publication for New Zealand (South Island) Southland Daily News, Invercargill

In a recent issue there appeared a most interesting article giving recollections of that great American writer and philanthropist, Mark Twain. Mark Twain's denunciation of Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, in his book entitled "Christian Science," is mentioned.

In view of the above, I should be extremely obliged if you would allow me space to draw your readers' attention to Mark Twain's later contradiction of his previous judgment which may come as news to many. He said: "Christian Science is humanity's boon. Mother Eddy deserves a place in the Trinity as much as any member of it. She has organized and made available a healing principle that for two thousand years has never been employed except as the merest kind of guess work. She is the benefactor of the age." (Mark Twain, A Biography, by Albert Bigelow Paine, 1912.)
