"Leaning on the sustaining infinite"

The Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, often referred to by Christian Scientists as their revered Leader, in the first line of the Preface to her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," makes this statement: "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings." Does anyone doubt this promise? Then let him study and ponder it so as to gain its spiritual import. He will never cease to be grateful for the experience.

What, one may ask, is "the sustaining infinite"? As revealed in Christian Science, "the sustaining infinite" is the one God, omnipotent, omnipresent Being, the All-in-all. Sustaining is that which supports, strengthens, nourishes. God, good, does all this for His entire creation. Those who lean upon Him for guidance and direction receive support. Those who are wholly trusting Him are nourished and strengthened. Abraham proved this when he was led up the mountain with his son Isaac. In fact, the Bible abounds with instances of those who trusted God and were rewarded with strength. We know that the word "infinite" means that which is without limits of any kind, boundless. And this so exactly describes God, who is limitless in power, love, and all good. Wisely does our Leader counsel us to lean upon this "sustaining infinite" and receive God's infinite blessings—protection, strength, and power.

Through the study of Christian Science we learn to lean upon God, "the sustaining infinite," and to feel the comfort of His angels with us. Mrs. Eddy defines "angels" in the textbook as "God's thoughts passing to man" (p. 581), and on page 567 she states, "These angels deliver us from the depths." Spiritually to understand that God is our refuge and our fortress is to lean upon "the sustaining infinite" and to find deliverance.
