I am deeply grateful for the many blessings that have come into my life through the study and application of the truths of Christian Science. When I was a small child my mother was headed of tuberculosis in what the doctors had said were its final stages. My grandmother had become slightly interested in Christian Science through the healing of my aunt and had purchased a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. She gave the book to my mother, thinking that she might be benefited by reading it. Always deeply religious and an earnest student of the Bible, my mother eagerly grasped and applied the truths of Christian Science as she studied the textbook and endeavored to put into practice the rules of healing contained therein. In a remarkably short time, with no help but the reading of the textbook, she was transformed from a frail, almost helpless invalid into a strong, healthy woman, devoting the remaining years of her long life to the healing work.

In those early days there were no Christian Scientists in the little town where we lived, and many believed my mother to be insane, and there was much criticism and skepticism expressed. Many, however, "who came to seed, remain'd to pray," and many healings comparable to those recorded in the Bible testified to her clear understanding of the demonstrable truths of Christian Science. With a family of four small children many healings of colds, diseases incidental to childhood, and injuries from accidents were among the blessings received. One of the first healings I remember was the almost instantaneous healing of my brother of what had been diagnosed as a very severe case of malignant diphtheria. When the doctor, an old family friend, acknowledged that he could do nothing for the child, my mother discarded all material help and turned to God in earnest realization of His power to heal. The symptoms, though terrifying, were quickly met and dispelled by her steadfast adherence to the truth, and the following day a complete and permanent healing was manifested.

It would be impossible in this limited space to recount the many healings that I have witnessed, but the one for which I am most grateful is the restoring of our little son after he had apparently passed on. As the result of an accident he was rendered unconscious, and a physician who was called pronounced him dead. My mother was summoned by telephone, and when she arrived she was met by the physician, who told her that he had done everything in his power to revive the child and there was nothing that she could do. She quietly asked that she be left alone in the room where the still form of the baby boy lay on the bed, and, shutting us all out, for more than half an hour she walked the floor, denying the evidence of the personal senses, declaring the allness of God, the eternality of Life, and man's oneness with that Life, until she heard him move and call out the name of his cousin. He sat up and began to play, fully restored to health.
