About eleven years ago I was still suffering severe pain from the aftereffects of an arm amputation which took place during the 1914—1918 war. I had undergone many operations for bulbous nerves by the best surgeons in the country, but could not get any relief and was taking drugs and medicine of some sort every day. I had lost faith in everything, and was fast becoming an atheist, when I became interested in Christian Science through my wife's healing of a condition which the doctors had said could not be cured unless she underwent a major operation.

When I attended my first Christian Science service of realized I had found "the peace of God, which passeth all understanding" (Phil. 4:7) and the truth that makes free. Although I had served in a medical corps and been a member of a hospital board for over ten years and had been a patient in seventeen hospitals, as soon as I started to study "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I lost all fear of the so-called laws of matter, materia medica, age, climate, and so forth. When I had read about a quarter of the textbook I realized that I was healed of smoking, social drinking, and the use of obscene language, and that several corns which had been on my feet had disappeared. My whole life was reformed and I found peace of mind and the joy of living.
