Of Good Report

"Where Two Or Three Are Gathered Together"

A member of The Mother Church, now living in one of the Fiji Islands, wrote to the Clerk some months ago expressing the hope that at some time she could meet a lecturer or worker in the Field who might be passing through, since the Islands are a port of call for ships and planes en route to and from New Zealand and Australia. She and her husband regularly hold Sunday services and Wednesday meetings, although they know of no one else in the Islands who is interested.

Within two months it was possible to arrange a meeting between a member of The Christian Science Board of Lectureship and this earnest student at a port in Fiji. Speaking of her experience, she writes: "This was a joyous privilege, and the benefit I derived from this meeting can never be expressed in words. The evidence of God's ever-present and loving care is being demonstrated daily in my experience and my cup is 'pressed down, ... and running over' with gratitude for Christian Science."

Gratitude Rewarded

A German woman received clothing bearing the label of the Christian Science War Relief Committee. Her letter of thanks, written in Lithuanian, told of her hope of finding a sister who had gone to America and from whom she had not heard in many years. The translator to whom the letter was sent for translation into English proved to be her missing sister.

A University Organization Student Center

In March,1945, Christian Science Organization at the University of Washington began to purchase a building site facing the campus. Meetings and lectures had been held on the campus from 1917, when the organization was founded, until 1932, when they were moved to the University Young Men's Christian Association in compliance with the state constitution, which prohibits the use of state property for religious purposes. A fund, started in 1928, formed the nucleus of the down payment, and with the aid of generous Christian Scientists the organization paid off the entire purchase price in fifteen months.

With the greatly increased enrollment at the university in 1946, a need for a Christian Science student center was recognized. An old house on the property was remodeled and furnished. On the first floor are a lounge and study rooms, where twelve sets of marked books for studying the Lesson-Sermon are available, also Mrs. Eddy's writings and the Christian Science periodicals; on the second floor is a room where the administration work is handled, also additional study room and a suite for the resident house mother; on the third floor are three rooms used by Christian Science boys who maintain the property in return for their lodgings.

Although Thursday evening meetings are still held in the university Y.M.C.A. because the house cannot accommodate the large attendance of students and faculty members, the building's usefulness is becoming increasingly apparent.

"These things were our examples"

A clergyman in French-speaking Switzerland who was about to give a lecture on Christian Science was using as his source material Science and Health and a book which is unfriendly to this Science. He was visited by the Christian Science Committee on Publication for that region, who gave him accurate information pertaining to his subject and loaned him copies of "The Life of Mary Baker Eddy" by Sibyl Wilbur and Mrs. Eddy's autobiography . "Retrospection and Introspection." He assured the Committee that his lecture would be revised, and later, when he returned the borrowed books, he said, "I have much to learn from the example of our Christian Science brethren, including their practice of the 'closed door' to all that is contrary to God, Love, and their unmovable faith in His sovereign presence."

Christian Science Activity In The Far East

A recent round-the-world air traveler met Christian Scientists and evidences of Christian Science activity in every city he visited. Even in such places as Saudi Arabia, although his stay was only of an hour's length, at the outposts he met earnest Christian Scientists doing their work. In Bangkok, Siam, where no formal organization exists, he met several Christian Scientists who told him of the services they hold in one another's homes each Sunday and alternate Wednesday evenings. The opportunities for service available to these little groups in out-of-the-way places is very impressive.
