Note: Christian Science churches are dedicated only when free from debt.

Newry, County Down, Eire (Society).

Christian Science was first introduced in this district in 1919, when a family of Christian Scientists came to reside in Rostrevor, and in 1920 another family came to Goraghwood. Soon services were being conducted each Sunday morning in a private house.

In 1925, it was found necessary to hire a room in Newry, where the services were continued. Three years later one of the original members was listed in The Christian Science Journal a an authorized Christian Science practitioner. As the interest spread a Sunday School was opened, and in 1933 the first Thanksgiving service was held.

Early in 1935 it was decided to purchase property in William Street. Newry, and in May of that year the first services were held in the new building. In October, 1936, the treasurer reported the church property free of debt.

Transport problems necessitated the curtailment of some of the church activities during the war years, although the Sunday School, Sunday morning service, and monthly midweek testimony meeting were uninterrupted. In May, 1946, Christian Science Society, Newry, was registered as a branch of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, Boston, Massachusetts, and a dedication service was held at Newry on Sunday, April 20, 1947.
