EVERY VALLEY EXALTED

Prepare a highway through the wilderness:
Cast out the thorns, the rocks of stubborn will,
And bridge with faith the deep and darkening shadows.
This is the task God helps us to fulfill.

When every dismal valley is exalted
And all the hills of self are leveled low,
Then shall our desert bloom in rosy grandeur,
And streams of healing waters gently flow:

The halting walk and leap in joyful freedom,
Dull ears awake; benighted eyes shall see.
On this straight way of holy consecration
The Christ may come and walk with you and me.
