Listening to God

A Student of Christian Science came home from high school one evening, sought the solitude of her room, and remained there until her mother came to tell her that dinner was almost ready. Noticing that there was no light, the latter asked, "Aren't you studying?"

"No, Mother, I've been listening to God," the girl replied. "For days I've been listening to error about one of my classmates, and today my ears seemed so full and painful that I didn't know how I could possibly finish the day. On the way home it came to me to listen to God, which I've been doing, and error has completely disappeared."

This experience proves that material listening is not a desirable means for the gaining of correct information. Isaiah awakens us to a clearer understanding of true perception when he says (Isa. 64:4), "Since the beginning of the world men have not heard, nor perceived by the ear, neither hath the eye seen, O God, beside thee, what he hath prepared for him that waiteth for him." If man does not perceive it by the ear, how is he to hear the Word of God?
