I had lived in Hong Kong for...

I had lived in Hong Kong for forty years. Some of you may have a slight idea of my feelings when, during the Christmas Day services in St. John's Cathedral, Vancouver, British Columbia, in 1941, the Dean paused and said, "I have just been informed that Hong Kong has fallen." It was not until after the service that I fully grasped what this meant to me. Then I realized that I was penniless. I had been drawing a pension from a firm in Hong Kong, and all the savings of a lifetime were invested out there.

For a moment I was quite stunned. On coming to myself I repeated that beautiful sentence of Mary Baker Eddy's which is found in the textbook (Science and Health, p. 494). "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need;" the Lord's Prayer with its spiritual, interpretation (ibid., pp. 16, 17), the "Daily Prayer" from the Manual (Art. VIII, Sect. 4). and the twenty-third Psalm. On arriving home I read the ninety-first Psalm and again from our textbook. I still felt very uneasy, and on Monday morning I consulted a practitioner. He was one of the kindest men it has ever been my privilege to meet. As soon as I had finished telling him my trouble, he leaned across and put his hand on my shoulder and said: "My dear Captain, you have nothing to fear. You have done no wrong, and God will look after and protect you."

After spending a very pleasant time with him I returned home feeling much better and brighter. Two or three days later I received loving letters from my two daughters, who were living in Fort Worth, Texas, telling me they had heard of the fall of Hong Kong, and knowing how I was situated, wanted me to come down there and live with them. Surely here was a direct answer to my prayers, showing clearly that our Father-Mother God is always watching over us, hearing and answering our prayers when we pray to Him in all sincerity.
